Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
