RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
