Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest specific calls from the official, echoing the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
